APNU will discontinue the Global Super League says Aubrey Norton
Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton, discussed several other issues with Kaieteur Sport Journalist, Rawle Toney.
Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Global Super (GSL) T20 tournament will be scrapped if the “A Partnership For National Unity” (APNU) is elected to government in September.
This was announced by APNU Presidential candidate Aubrey Norton.
Norton was speaking on the #HearMeOut sports podcast on July 19, with sports journalist Rawle Toney in a wide ranging discussion about sports in Guyana.
“I will have to assess it (GSL) properly but on face value I wouldn’t”, said Norton when asked if he would keep the GSL.
He continued: “Because in my opinion we need to not just in Guyana, but in the entire Caribbean go back to basics and get our systems up and running.”
Norton expanded further citing his concerns on the state of West Indies cricket and why fixing the fundamentals needed to produce test match ready cricketers in the Caribbean, was more important than running a second T20 tournament in the region, next to the CPL T20.
“West Indies just got bowled out for 27. It shouldn’t be seen lightly as it’s part of a systemic failure.
Norton continued: “If you are going to develop West Indies cricket, you have to look strong and hard at the mentality problem with our cricket.”

“This is the T20 generation. You (players) have difficulty concentrating for 50 overs and it is obvious it’s getting worse at the level of tests.”
“You cannot remove from our history the existence of test matches. And in the cricket world you are not considered the best cricketer unless you achieve at the level of tests.”
The second edition of the controversial tournament ended on July 18th, created controversy when non Guyanese international commentators Daren Ganga, Carlos Brathwaite, Niall O’Brein and Alex Jordan were publicly endorsing the President Irfan Ali for a second term in office on live broadcast.
From the inception critics in Guyana and the wider Caribbean have questioned its benefits and relevance to the West Indies cricket ecosystem.
Its latest controversy was why it was being played during Australia’s first marquee test tour to the Caribbean since 2015.
On July 19th Trinidad & Tobago sports broadcast Andre Baptiste on WESN TV flagged to confusion that the GSL final was being played 48 hours before the 1st T20 between West Indies and Australia on July 20th in Jamaica.
West Indies T20 captain Shai Hope had confirmed on for pre series preparation versus Australia, they were missing seven squad players in Akeal Hosein, Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford, Evin Lewis, Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie & Jewel Andrew due to their presence at GSL.
The GSL, which is the brainchild of President Irfan Ali and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), started in November 2024.
Ali announced the competition idea during the 2024 Caricom Cricket Symposium in Trinidad & Tobago (T&T), organized by former T&T Prime Minister and Caricom cricket committee chairman Dr. Keith Rowley.
Ali now chairs that cricket committee.
West Indies Cricket wasn’t an agenda item during the last CARICOM meeting held in Montego Bay, Jamaica from July 6-8, one-week before West Indies were bowled out for the historic low of 27 in the Day-night, pink-ball test at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica.
