Kaieteur Sports – Mercenary were crowned the 2025 Ontario Softball Cricket League (OSCL) 10-10 Vish Jadunauth champions after beating Caribbean Sensation by 8 wickets on Saturday at St. Bedes ground, Scarborough.
Mercenary won the toss and elected to bowl. They justified the decision after leaving Caribbean Sensation wobbling at 24-4 in the 5th over before restricting them to a modest 64-7 at the end of the 10-overs.
Their chase was clinical and led superbly by opener Avinash Sookdeo with an enterprising, unbeaten 43 as they got to the target with 5 balls to spare.
The right-handed and Canada-based Guyanese Sookdeo hammered 5 sixes and two fours during his 24-ball knock and was with Richard Latiff, who was on 7 when victory achieved.
Sookdeo was meticulous initially, but started to accelerate despite Mercenary lost opening batsman Avish Rukhram for 7 and then soon after Richard Dias for 03.
But the confident Sookdeo and Latiff ensured there was no more fuss.
Earlier, Caribbean Sensation had a promising start of 21 runs for the first-wicket between skipper Faheer Juman (6) and Anil Ramoutar (8). But both perished to Rabindra Diaram while Anil Samuel and another frontline batter Anand Balwant gone for 3 and 2 respectively.
Sheik Khan batted aggressively and punched an effortless six and four to remain on 14 not out, the top-scorer but Caribbean Sensation continued to struggle for momentum as Mercenary took few splendid catches.
Diaram finished with 2-11 from his maximum two overs while Rukhram also picking two wickets but he conceded 13 runs from his 1-over outing.
At the post-match Presentation ceremony, Sookdeo was named player-of-the-match for his responsible and memorable innings and was voted as the MVP on the winning team.
