-Aiming at National Junior Golf Championship in June
Kaieteur Sports- Queen’s College (QC) has officially joined the ranks of schools embracing the fastest growing sport in the country – golf. The school has formed its first-ever golf club and is set to compete at the 3rd Annual National Junior Golf Championship, scheduled for June 27th at the Nexgen Golf Academy, Woolford Avenue.
Minister of Education, Hon. Priya Manickchand, welcomed the school’s involvement in the programme, stating: “We are proud to see institutions like Queen’s College embracing golf and giving students access to a new and enriching sporting experience. Our goal is to ensure that every learner in Guyana is exposed to at least one sport, and golf offers an excellent platform for developing discipline, focus, and character. This is more than a game; it’s a gateway to opportunity.”
Through strategic partnerships with Nexgen Golf Academy and the Guyana Golf Association (GGA), the Ministry of Education continues to expand access to sports in schools nationwide.
The upcoming National Junior Golf Championship is expected to attract student-athletes from across the country and showcase the growing talent pool being developed in Guyana.
Widely regarded as one of the top secondary institutions in Guyana, QC is now part of the nationwide golf development movement that has introduced thousands of students to the sport in recent years. The club will benefit from coaching provided by Aleem Hussain, a former Queen’s College student and currently the country’s top golf coach.
Hussain, who heads the Nexgen Golf Academy and the Guyana Golf Association, is known for his unique teaching method, which promises to teach beginners how to strike a golf ball effectively in under 15 minutes. Students and athletes from around the world have praised his innovative approach to coaching.
Queen’s College becomes the latest addition to a growing list of secondary schools integrating golf into their extracurricular and physical education programmes. The national initiative has led to hundreds of students choosing golf as their CSEC Physical Education elective, further boosting the sport’s presence in the education system.
