Kaieteur Sports – The inaugural Nigel “Bully” Barnes memorial three a side small goal football competition came off with a bang last Sunday. The activity which was organized by the Overseas Disturbance Group was held at the Vryman’s Erven Basketball Court, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The competition saw six teams taking to the arena with the two strikers clashing in the finals. In the end it was Blue Strikers that defeated Super Strikers 1-0 with Travis Flatts striking in the 8 minute to seal the win. The winning team was made up of Mickel Georgeson, Randy Sears and Travis Flatts.
The third place winner had to be decided from the penalty spot with Dream FC edging past Red Devils 3-2. The other two teams that participated in the competition were Bullies and Green Flash.
The teams were divided into two groups made up of three teams each.
The packed arena saw a good brand of football being played in the well organised tournament. Each game lasted 20 minutes.
Trophies and other incentives were awarded to the top three teams plus the outstanding individual players.
The players from the three top teams were all presented with trophies. Travis Flatts of Blue Strike walked away with the MVP and most goals award. The most promising player on show was Royon Captain of Super Strike.
The first and third place trophies were donated by Robert “Buntin” Carrington. While the second place trophies was donated by Engineering 592.
Others donors included Charlie Humphrey, Ivor Fraser, Ian Carter, Okeema Humphrey, Trevor Hooper and Joan Humphrey among others.
Nigel ‘Bully’ Barnes was a former resident and sports personality of New Amsterdam Berbice.
He was also a former student of the Berbice High School where he participated in a number of sporting and extra-curricular activities.
He represented the County and the Cougars Football Club at football and was a regular fixture from the U16 level up to first division.
Barnes also represented the New Amsterdam/ Canje District at the national school athletics championship on a regular basis with success.
He subsequently migrated to Canada where he lived with his family.
