Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) One Guyana Open Singles tournament, which kicked off on July 1st, continued with thrilling matches on Tuesday at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue in Georgetown. The tournament’s commencement marked the beginning of an illustrious 2023 season, featuring five days of fierce competition among the nation’s top tennis players.
On Day five, the spectators in the NRC stands witnessed an impressive performance by Afruica Gentle, the CIAA Player of the Year, as she advanced to the semi-final stage. Gentle secured her spot after defeating the reigning Ladies champion, Renola Jordan, during their intense quarter-final encounter. Notably, Phillip Squires, Nathan DeNobrega, Surrendra Khayyam, Aubrey Younge and Ronald Murray all emerged victorious on day five of the inaugural GTA Open tourney.
In the Women’s Open Singles quarter-finals match; Afruica Gentle faced off against Renola Jordan, with Gentle dominating the reigning champion and securing a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory. Her exceptional display of skill and technique left the audience in awe.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Open Singles category, Phillip Squires defeated Zack Panday in their round of 64 encounter, securing his place in the round of 32. Nathan DeNobrega, seeded at number five, showcased his prowess by defeating Jeremiah Kalekeyzi 6-1 and 6-0, utilizing his solid serve and backhand, forehand strokes. Kalekeyzi’s valiant efforts fell short against the versatile and talented DeNobrega in their round of 16 match.
Surrendra Khayyam demonstrated his exceptional experience, overpowering the talented Malik Barker in a two-set victory (6-4, 6-2). Aubrey Younge also displayed his prowess by defeating Leroy Chapman 2-0, while Ronald Murray crushed Elwin Levius by an identical scoreline in the round of 32. These victories secured their respective places in the round of 16, further intensifying the competition.
The excitement continued to unfold at the same venue yesterday.
