Golf Elective Participation Surges as 2026 CSEC Practical Examinations Conclude
– National Junior Championships set for July 3
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Golf Association (GGA) has announced the successful completion of the 2026 CSEC Physical Education Golf Elective practical examinations, which were conducted at the Nexgen Golf Academy on Woolford Avenue and the Westside Golf Course.
The practical assessments formed part of the continued expansion of golf within the national school system, with participation numbers once again increasing across several regions, particularly among female students.
Students from Regions Two and Seven were, however, required to complete their practical examinations on regular sporting grounds due to transportation challenges and the absence of adequate golf facilities within those regions.
GGA president Aleem Hussain said he expects more brilliant performances this year from his golf students at the recent CSEC Physical Education exams.
Despite these limitations, organizers noted strong enthusiasm and participation from students and teachers alike.
The growing popularity of the sport is expected to be reflected at the upcoming 4th Annual National Junior Golf Championship, scheduled for July 3, 2026, at the Westside Golf Course.
Tournament organizers estimate that more than 400 players from across Guyana will compete, making it one of the largest junior golf events ever staged in the Caribbean.
During an interview yesterday, president of the Guyana Golf Association (GG), Aleem Hussain, praised the efforts of the Ministry of Education’s Allied Arts Unit for its continued commitment to developing golf in schools through its partnership with the Nexgen Golf Academy.
He noted that the collaboration has enabled thousands of students nationwide to be introduced to the sport over the past several years.
Hussain also highlighted the importance of the Westside Golf Course as a major addition to Guyana’s sporting infrastructure. Located just off the Schoonard Highway at the Crane Roundabout, the facility provides easy access for players from Georgetown, West Demerara and the East Bank Demerara corridor to participate in recreational golf, training sessions and competitive tournaments.
The facility continues to position itself as a family-friendly recreational destination and is open daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Players are provided with complimentary access to golf clubs and balls once they patronize the restaurant and entertainment facilities on site.
The GGA believes the rapid growth of the golf programme in schools demonstrates the sport’s increasing appeal among young people and its potential to contribute positively to discipline, honesty, networking and lifelong recreational opportunities for students throughout Guyana. (Clifton Ross)
