Kaieteur Sports – Following the global reveal that long-time rivals Professional Golf Tours (PGA) and Saudi-backed rival group, LIV Golf merger to create one unified world golf entity, president of the Guyana Golf Association (GGA) Aleem Hussain believes the move could one day help boost the fraternity locally.

The recent LIV/PGA merger could benefit the sport globally, Guyana included, says GG president Aleem Hussain.
According to Hussain, the GGA/Nexgen Golf has been actively involved in discussions to create a specialized partnership with several world golf organizations that will place Guyana on the map when it comes to golf tourism.
“Over the past few months, we have been engaged in serious talks with these groups that are designed to bring world-class golf events and massive influx of tourism revenue to Guyana. We are very excited about this Agreement that emerged today and hopefully will be making a similarly significant announcement in the near future,” said GGA head.
Guyana has risen to capture attention in the world of golf with the amazing growth of the sport in a very short time due to the GGA’s partnership with the Ministry of Education /Unit of Allied Arts, especially in the area of developing youths and women.
Despite limited access to golf facilities, Guyana has excelled in CSEC Golf with several hundred students taking golf as a Physical Education elective, citing Hussain to say that an international merger of such magnitude could eventually create a ripple-effect which will benefit all golf-playing nations in the future, with Guyana being one of the hubs for the sport regionally.
He also believed that should Guyana happen to benefit from any major external entity, the sport will reach unimaginable heights, with regard to development, specifically the opening of golf courses across the country while more access to overseas competitions and invitational will becomes a bit more feasible with Guyanese golfers getting the opportunity to showcase skills abroad.
Another huge plus according to Hussain, who is also one of Guyana’s top golfers, is the massive influx of talent which will be flooding the local scene, should international relationships be forged following this groundbreaking move.
He wrapped up by saying that the country has already been used to hosting hundreds of golfers as part of the annual Guyana Open Cup Tournament and any outside impetus will only allow the fraternity to further grow, as Guyana has been a major hub for golfers from around the globe, for more than a decade.
Meanwhile, the new agreement between the two entities will see the PGA Tour’s and LIV Golf’s commercial businesses and rights being combined into a new, yet-to-be-named for-profit company. The agreement includes the DP World Tour, also known as the PGA European Tour.
