Kaieteur News – The Guyana Masters Football Team put forth a masterful performance in the final match of the International Masters Goodwill Football Tournament to defeat Suriname’s SV Ratio Masters Team and lift the Modern Optical Trophy.
Suriname arrived here on Saturday for the third match of the best-of-three format, which took place on Monday evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground. Prior to the start of the match, the aggregate between the sides from the two previous match was 2 – 2.
These two sides are the only teams in the event and are were tied at 1 – 1 after Guyana won the opening leg 1 – 2 in Suriname then the opposition leveled the series with a 0 – 1 victory at GFC. However, Guyana were able to secure a 3 – 1 win on Monday for the final aggregate to read, 5 – 3.
Drawing first blood for the host side was Anthony Abrams who found the back of the net in the 16th minute. That goal was the tension breaker for Guyana, but signaled the visitors to rethink their defensive plan. The remainder of the first half went goalless.
After the 15-minute break, Rawle Gittens doubled the lead for the home team in the 48th minute. Eight minutes later it became a one-possession match again when Suriname pulled one back through Nizam Froade in the 56th minute.
When the eight minutes that followed that goal was reached, Guyana made it a two-possession game once again when Dellon Alleyne (64th) scored the host team’s final goal.
At the presentation ceremony, Abrams was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP), his teammate Andrew Bright copped the Best Goal Keeper award, while Suriname’s Ravwani Comacho won the Best Defender award.
Meanwhile, the organiser Sheldon Bobb was very appreciative for the assistance received for the event by sponsors such as Modern Optical Services, Impressions, Bounty Farm Ltd., Dyna’s Embroidery and Farm Supply.
