New York Independence Cup called off, but Parasnauth confident of Prime Minister’s T20 Cup

Veteran softball player Bobby Parasnauth says we have to deal with the new reality of COVID-19 which affects this year’s New York Independence Softball Cup slated for July 1.

However, he is very optimistic that softball players and adorable fans should get the chance to watch some actions in the 2020 Prime Minister’s T20 Cup billed for later this year in Guyana.
After the arrival of the pandemic earlier in 2020, no outdoor activities are allowed forcing the authorities from the New York Softball Cricket League to abandon the softball three-day extravaganza. Teams from US, Canada and Guyana, on a yearly basis participated with the winning teams in the three categories receiving cash prizes and trophies. The three categories are: Open, Masters and the Legends.
According to the versatile all-rounder Parasnauth, a Canadian-based Guyanese player, he will definitely miss this year’s tournament.
“New York Independence Cup is a tournament that every softball player cherishes to be part of. Apart from the game itself, the relationships and camaraderie between our fellow Guyanese is something we look forward to every year as we do for other softball tournaments. I have been participating in this tournament for the past 15 years and this year will be the first I will spend in Canada (July 1) in those 15 years,” Parasnauth related.
He further stated that because of the deadly virus he is urging people to practice social distancing and maximize on the use of sanitation, while he is hopeful that the annual Prime Minister’s Softball tournament will come off.
“The future of softball cricket may change as the way things are changing during these unprecedented times. There may be other costs that the Leagues will have to bear if and when we resume such tournament. For now the only tournament that looks a bit possible is the Prime Minister’s T20 Cup in Guyana since it is usually held in the latter part of the year; however that’s left to be seen.”
Regal of Georgetown won the open and masters categories of the NY Independence Cup in the 2016 and successfully defended their masters’ title in 2017. In an invited comment, Captain of the Regal Masters team Mahendra Hardyal said they will surely miss the tournament this year adding that his players were looking forward to competing.
In last year’s edition, SVC won the open category, New York Masters took the over-45 title and Canadian Legends grabbed the over-50 accolade.
The Prime Minister’s T20 softball cup is being hosted by the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc and when contacted the organisers said they remain positive that this year’s edition of the tournament will be played, but noted that the safety of players is priority.
