D’Edward Cricket Club defeated West Berbice powerhouse Blairmont Community Centre Cricket Club by 7 wickets to advance to the quarterfinals of the New Building Society/Berbice Cricket Board 40-Overs tournament.
The Playoff match was a replay after D’Edward had successfully appeal to the Neil Rudder led Competitions Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board. Playing at the neutral Cotton Tree Ground as ordered by the Committee, D’Edward won the toss and inserted Blairmont Community Centre.
Blairmont Community Centre was bowled out for 146 all out in 33.1 overs, Javed Karim top scored with 40 (3×4 2×6), Nigel Deodat 57 (5×4 3×6) while Goverdran Khan supported with 19. The main bowlers for D’Edward were offspinner Devindra Lalsa 3-34, left armspinner Hemraj Harilall 2-18 and veteran Eon Abdel, 3-19.
D’Edward requiring 147 runs from 40-Overs to create a huge upset, soon found themselves in trouble at 2-2 in the 3rd over, Altaf Khan was dismissed for 1 by Nigel Deodat and Shabeer Baksh had Keith Fraser caught and bowled for one.
Lakeraj Sookra and the evergreen Jaipaul Heeralall then added a match winning 135 for the third wicket. Lakeraj Sookra top scored with an aggressive 70 (4×4 6×6) before he was dismissed with just ten runs required. Captain Heeralall was left unbeaten on 60 when victory was achieved.
D’Edward would now play Bush Lot United Cricket Club in the quarterfinals tomorrow at the Bush Lot Ground. Young Warriors and Rose Hall Canje would clash in another quarterfinal on Sunday at the Canje, Welfare Ground.
The winners of both matches would meet in the semifinals. Rose Hall Town Bakewell has already reached the finals after defeating Ramnarine Memorial Cricket Club and No. 72 Cut and Load Cricket Club in their quarter final and semifinal matches, respectively.
