AAG Carifta Trials…Browne and Pellew make qualifying marks as Phillips and Smith narrowly miss out

Over the weekend, the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) held its first of three scheduled Carifta Games 2019 trials at the National Track and Field Center (NTFC), Leonora, with two athletes in Princess Browne and Osrick Pellew making the qualifying marks in their respective disciplines.
Browne of Running Braves Athletics Club (RBAC) leaped 12.02 to win the Girls’ Under-17 Triple Jump event, bettering the AAG’s Carifta Standard (CS) distance of 11.60m.
Meanwhile, Pellew matches the CS time of 11.00 to win the boys’ Under-17 100m dash. However, the youngster had blazed to a 10.98 finish in the preliminaries.
While Browne and Pellew had success the others didn’t. Kenisha Phillips and Keliza Smith came closest to success. Smith missed the Girls’ Under-15 Long Jump CS qualifying time by five centimeters after jumping 5.45m with qualifying time being 5.50.
Smith would suffer heartbreak again after her time of 57.70 seconds in the Under-17 400 sprint, 0 .7 second slower than the qualifying time of 57 seconds.
Philips narrowly missed the CS time in the Girls’ Under-20 100m and 200m sprints. In the 100m, she ran 11.89 with the CS time being 11.80, while the CS time in the 200m was 24.20, Phillips finished in a decent 24.67 seconds for the win.

Last weekend’s track meet also served as the AAG’s third Developmental meet of the year and it attracted some decent performances from the senior athletes.
National men’s Javelin record holder, Leslain Baird, who had set out a target of 70m at last weekend’s development meet, came close with a throw of 69.81m at the West Coast Demerara (WCD) venue.
In the marquee Open 100m races; Alita Moore was the women’s champion with a time of 12.19 seconds in final, while Akeem Stewart won the men’s race in 10.71 seconds.
Elton Bollers continues to improve and he clocked 21.79 seconds in the Open Men’s 200m to win, while Tonya Rawlings dashed across the half-track race in 25.94 seconds to win the Women’s Open.
