Sixteen year-old Amy Grant, a student of School of the Nations in the City won another gold on Wednesday last at the Guyana Teachers Union National Schools Track and Field, Swimming and Cycling Championships which concluded on Friday last.
The multi talented Grant after dominating in the swimming pool with four gold medals, ended off her haul of gold medals by topping her rivals in the Javelin. Grant explained that she doesn’t get a lot of time for Track and Field because swimming takes up a lot of her spare time when she gets the opportunity to hit the pool.
At the closing ceremony on Friday evening at the Leonora Stadium, prizes for the Top teams, Girls and Boys were presented to the winners by various celebrities, government officials and Banks DIH representatives.
Amy Grant picked up the Champion Girl trophy in the Girls 18 & Under category for winning all her events at the Aquatic Center, Liliendaal at the start of the games on Monday last.
Now that the championships are over Grant can look forward to her birthday, which comes up near Christmas making it a good time to celebrate. She wishes all of the athletes who participated in the 58th National Schools Championships a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Coaching can be very thankless because winning is credited to athletes whereas the blame for losing is often put on coaches whose contributions often go unnoticed on the sidelines but Grant is expressing gratitude to her coaches for their endless encouragement, guidance, inspiration and motivation.
Grant, who recognises that one the toughest job is for a parent to be their child’s coach, is very thankful for the amount of time and years her mother has coached her in swimming. She would also like to thank Coach Ambrose, Coach Scott and especially Coach Clint Hinds, who has worked above and beyond the call of duty resulting in her success in the field event.
“It is their inspiration that fuels my zest to succeed and converts the bitter pain of sacrifice into the sweet taste of victory,” Grant stated whilst also wishing Dr. Jeffrey, Dr. Rohan Jabour and Dr. Paula Alexander a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2019.
She noted that she is very thankful for the collective support of the trio of Doctors who have all done their best to make it possible for her to have re-started her sporting exploits in the competition pool and track and field.
“Without their support and expertise I would not have been able to be in the 2018 GTU Nationals School Championships and to them I say thanks but most of all to God for his blessings.”
