Blairmount Cricket Club in West Bank Berbice was awarded the ‘Most Improved Club of the year by the Berbice Cricket Board at their last Awards Ceremony and first since 2014.
Blairmont Cricket Centre Club is a founder member of the BCB was very active and productive before 2002.
Resuscitated on 26th May 2010 with election being held and under Shabeer Baksh’s leadership the club’s primary focus is Youth, Community and Sports development as the Club which once hosted First-Class matches, has grown from strength to strength since then.
New BCB President Hilbert Foster noted that Blairmont Cricket Club is ranked among the best clubs in Berbice such as Albion, Rose Hall Young and Sports Club and Young Warriors and has produced several players for Berbice and Guyana.
From 2015-2017, the club ensured its members continued to play cricket despite the situation in Berbice cricket which was played in the Court more than on the field.
Proactive BCCC President Shabeer Baksh informed that the only BCB tournament played by his club during that period was one First Division match in when they defeated West Berbice and four Second division games with Blairmount winning Zone A (West Berbice) in that tournament.
Baksh said the club organized matches with sister-clubs such Cold Fusion (Zeelugt), Port Mourant, Young Warriors, Albion, Bush Lot United, Lusignan, Rose Hall Town, Skeldon, Kendall’s Union, D’Edward, Tucber Park, Shieldstown, Cotton Tree, Jai Hind, and Chesney to keep their players active. Baksh also informed that there was also a lot of inter club games played.
According to Baksh, the club has 10 active teams, U-13, U-15 ‘A’ & ‘B’ teams, U-17, U-19, U-21, two Second Division teams, a First Division and over-40 team and hosted cricket Academy teams from the US and Canada during this period.
The Club also participates in the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFLSCA) competition. The club also plays in the ‘Well Teen’ and Trophy Stall U-13 Tourney which they won. Eight of the members of that team went on to make Berbice U-15 teams.
Blairmont CCC also partner with Guyana Umpiring body in a fundraiser to assist the umpires to attend a Seminar in Jamaica last July and held cricket clinics during the Easter, July/August and Christmas school vacations.
An Award Ceremony was done to inspire cricketers as the club recognized individuals who have served in cricket and education and also assisted the community members who are less fortunate.
There were tours conducted to educate its members in cricket (CPL) and the history of Guyana.
At the BCB Award Ceremony members of BCCC Javed Karim, Guyana under-19 opening batsman was named Junior Role Model cricketer of the Year, while national U-15 Captain Marvan Prashad was named most outstanding U-15 player of the Year.
The club thanked Banks DIH, GTT, Republic Bank, Hand in Hand, New Building Society, Berbice River Bridge Company, Baksh Travel Service, Green’s Massive, Big B’s Restaurant and Region five Chambers of Commerce among others for their sponsorship of the Club.
