There will be 11 clubs participating in the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation’s (GABF) 2018 National Club Championship (Road to Mecca V). Six clubs from the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), which is the local association for two-time defending champions Bounty Colts, while the usual four from the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) and one team from Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA).
Colts defeated LABA’s Victory Valley Royals 85-83 in the closely contested 2017 final at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) last Christmas Eve to successfully defend their 2016 title. Meanwhile, Kobras (third seed in 2018) who had to play the qualifiers to reach the tournament last year, defeated Dyna’s Ravens 76-75 after extra-time in the third place playoff.
This year, Ravens didn’t make the automatic cut in Road to Mecca V after their poor performance in the just concluded GABA 1st division knockout tournament. Republic Bank Nets, which finished second behind Colts in that knockout tournament, usurped Ravens in this year’s National tournament.
Ravens are still in with a chance and will play the winner of last night’s GABA qualifier between Pepsi Sonics and Eagles for their place in Road to Mecca V which carries a total prize purse of $2-million.
Last year’s Berbice representative Rose Hall Jammers will not be returning to National Championships which will see the winning team pocket $600,000 since they are soon to be dethroned as BABA champions.

Action during last year’s Road to Mecca IV between Pacesetters (Stephan Gillis with ball) and Plaisance Guardians. Much action is anticipated in this year’s tourney which bounces off Saturday.
In the ongoing BABA tournament that concludes this Saturday, Rose Hall Jammers lost 58-37 to Canje Knights in that tournament’s second semi-final, while Hopetown Stealers got past Fyrish Black Sharks 54-49 in the first semi-final. The winners of the final, the 2018 BABA champion will be the lone Berbice representative in Mecca V.
The 2nd place finishers of the Mecca will receive $400,000 and 3rd $300,000 while the tournament’s MVP will walk away with a handsome $200,000, the player with the most points $100,000, most rebounds $100,000 and the most improved player $100,000 along with team and individual trophies and fan giveaways.
