The newly elected Berbice Cricket Board under the Presidency of Hilbert Foster continued to fulfill its commitment to make sure that Cricket is played in every area in the ancient county. The Board President was able to obtain a Sponsorship from a prominent West Coast Berbice Businessman to host a 40-Overs Knockout Cricket Tournament for Second Division teams based in the Berbice River area. The Businessman, who wished to remain unknown has business interest in the area and is well known to residents in the riverain district. The Berbice Cricket Board has agreed to name the five teams’ tournament “The Berbice River Say No to Drugs Cricket Tournament” as part of its social message programme.
The five teams that would be involved in the tournament are Kimbia, Wiruni Volcano, Friendship, Ebini Ranch Raiders and Calcuni. After a draw conducted at the Berbice Cricket Board Office, the fixture was decided. In the first round Kimbia Cricket Club would play Wiruni Volcano at Wiruni, while Calcuni would travel to Ebini Ranch Raiders to play Ebini Ranch Raiders. Friendship Cricket Club drew the bye in the first round. The winner of the first match would play Friendship in the lone semifinals, while the winner of Calcuni and Ebini match would advance to the finals. The date and venue for the Finals would be announced once the finalists are known.
Foster, disclosed that the Berbice Cricket Board would be seeking to organise at least two other tournaments in the Berbice River Area, while great efforts would be made to conduct coaching clinics during the year and they would also benefit from cricket gears, educational cricket materials and scorebooks among others.
Foster disclosed that each of the five sub-divisions in the county “Berbice River, West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Central/Upper Corentyne” would benefit equally from his administration’s efforts to restore Berbice Cricket to its rightful place. The Berbice River area over the years has suffered from a lack of attention from its parent body but this would be corrected in 2018. Great effort would also be made to get teams in the area to visit the mainland to play more experienced teams. He expressed full confidence that the Say No to Drugs 40-Overs Cricket Tournament would be a major success and urged the teams involved to play with discipline and passion.
Foster, who is also the Secretary/CEO of Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation, the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, pledged that he and his entire executive body would work hard to make certain that 2018 would be an historic year in Berbice Cricket. He expressed gratitude to the sponsor of the tournament and announced that a 20/20 league would start immediately after the completion of the 40-Overs tournament.
