Kwasie Maloney, a former member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was yesterday remanded to prison on three counts of illegal gun and ammunition charges, and for escaping lawful custody.
The defendant appeared before Senior Magistrate, Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and denied the charge which alleged that on October 12, last, at the Route 44 Minibus Park, he had in his possession, a 9mm pistol when he was not the a licenced firearm holder.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question, he had in his possession 19 rounds of 59 by 28mm of ammunition along with a component of a spent shell.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question, the defendant escaped from the Brickdam Police Station, while he was in custody, pending charges of possession of illegal gun and ammunition.
Police Prosecutor, Richard Harris objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charges attracts. The prosecutor also told the court that police officers conducted a search on the defendant and the gun was found in his waist.
The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison.
Meanwhile before the same magistrate, a labourer was also remanded to prison after he denied a charge which alleged that on October 12 at Hunter Street, Albouystown, he had in his possession one .38 revolver and five matching rounds when he was not a licenced firearm holder.
Travis Moore, 25 of Lot 506 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was represented by Attorney-at-law, Tiffany Jeffery.
The lawyer asked that bail be granted to her client since the alleged firearm and ammunition were not found in his possession.
The lawyer argued that the firearm and ammunition could have belonged to anyone since there were multiple passengers in the vehicle at the time.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question, police officers stopped motor car PTT 5158 and a search was conducted on the occupants in the vehicle and the firearm and ammunition were found in her client’s haversack.
The prosecutor also told the court that the defendant gave the police a caution statement in which he admitted to the offence.
Both men were instructed to make their next court appearance on October 30.
