Over 500 girls sought emergency protection from abuse since 2020 – Minister Persaud
(Kaieteur News) – Some 532 girls under the age of 18 were placed in emergency care between 2020 and 2025 after experiencing abuse, according to Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Vindhya Persaud.
The figures were disclosed in a written response to questions submitted to the National Assembly by Opposition Member of Parliament and Leader of the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), Amanza Walton.
Walton had asked the minister to state how many emergency safe housing placements were provided to girls under 18 fleeing domestic violence during the 2020–2025 period.

In her response, Minister Persaud said the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) reported that 532 girls were placed into care due to abuse over the five-year period.
She explained that the children were accommodated through state-run care facilities, privately operated homes and foster care arrangements.
Walton also sought information on the number of social workers assigned across the country to handle adolescent protection matters.
The minister reported that there are 63 child protection officers deployed nationwide.
By region, Region One has two officers, Region Two has five and Region Three has four.
Region Four has the largest complement, with 23 officers stationed across four locations—seven on the East Coast Demerara, five on the East Bank Demerara, five in North Georgetown and six in South Georgetown.
Region Five has five officers, while Region Six has 12, comprising six in New Amsterdam, three in Whim and three in Corriverton.
Region Seven has one officer, Regions Eight and Nine have three officers each, and Region Ten has five, all based at the regional offices.
