(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali on Wednesday announced plans to establish a Government Service Centre in Santa Rosa, Moruca, which he said will bring essential public services closer to residents of the sub-region.
The announcement was made during the president’s outreach to Region One, where he explained that the facility will transform the existing post office into a one-stop location for a range of government services.
The centre will provide access to services from agencies including the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) and the General Register Office (GRO). It will also offer digital identification services, passport renewal assistance, agricultural extension support and banking services through an automated teller machine (ATM).
President Ali said the facility will also make it easier for residents to access the government’s GOAL scholarship programme, allowing persons to pursue tertiary education opportunities without having to leave the region.
He added that the centre will be staffed by residents of the community, who will be trained to provide the necessary services.
The initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to decentralise public services and make them more accessible to communities outside of the country’s main urban centres. (Modified from DPI)
