(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious plan to transform Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, into Guyana’s first pilot “model community” as the government launched a new round of public consultations in Region Four.
According to an office of the president release, President Ali emphasised a holistic approach to community development that extends beyond roads and buildings to include people, culture, environment, economy, and public services.
He highlighted Kaneville’s historical roots, infrastructure improvements, and the aim of providing Georgetown-level amenities such as green spaces, recreation, beautification, drainage, safe streets, and community facilities to villages.
Stressing the significance of biodiversity, trees, safe public areas, and active community involvement—including sport and religious organisations—while calling for neighbourliness, discipline, law adherence, and designated zones for businesses to protect residents’ health and safety.
The Head of State was joined by Speaker of the National Assembly, the Honourable Manzoor Nadir; Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Vickram Bharrat; Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, the Honourable Zulfikar Ally; Minister within the Ministry of Housing, the Honourable Vanessa Benn; Regional Executive Officer, Juan Edghill Jr; and a number of agency heads and community leaders.
The Model Village Initiative continued in Grove and Diamond today, with several meetings scheduled for Thursday on the East Coast of Demerara.
