Govt. to build $1.5B elderly home at Enmore
(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is seeking a contractor to construct a new Elderly Assisted Living Facility at Enmore, Region Four, with the project estimated to cost $1.5B.
This is according to an invitation for bids issued by the ministry and published on the Government of Guyana’s procurement website.
The tender notice states that bids for the project are expected to be opened on 27th August, 2026, at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
Plans for the construction of the new elderly care facility were first announced by the government in the 2024 National Budget.
The Palms Geriatric Home located on Brickdam, is Guyana’s longest elderly residential facility.
During the presentation of the 2026 National Budget, Senior Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, said the government will expand support services for senior citizens.
“We will expand home-based care services, increase access to healthcare through telemedicine and mobile health units for rural and underserved areas and virtual clinics for the elderly. Government will also co-invest in elderly care facilities, construct a new senior citizen home, and improve the quality of the care for the current residents of the Palms,” he said.
Meanwhile, during the consideration of the estimates and expenditures of the 2026 Budget in February, Human Services Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud highlighted plans for the new senior citizens’ home as part of broader efforts to improve care for elderly and vulnerable citizens.
“We are constructing a brand-new senior citizens’ home, and that home already has all the modern amenities and facilities. We already have a design for it,” the minister was quoted as saying by the Department of Public Information (DPI).
While preparations continue for the new facility, $18M has been allocated in the 2026 Budget for repairs to the Palms Geriatric Home.
