Sylvester Vanderhyden, 34 of Block ‘A’ Lot 3974 Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for murder.
Vanderhyden was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on November 5, 2008 at Agricola, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Melissa Payne.
According to information Payne was killed after she attempted to put up a fight with gunmen who attacked her and a male friend, David Fraser, on the Agricola Public Road.
The gunmen escaped with $110,000 in cash that was in the bag and with jewellery as the couple was were heading to Georgetown to conduct business.
It was reported that as Payne and Fraser approached Agricola, the Canter truck in which they were travelling, encountered mechanical problems. Fraser stopped and came out and attempted to fix the truck.
It was after he exited the vehicle that a man approached them with a gun and demanded they hand over the money. One of the other men then snatched Fraser’s gold chain and attempted to pull away Payne’s handbag.
Payne resisted and one of the gunmen shot and killed her.
Vanderhyden is the second person to be charged with the murder since Jermaine Savory of Lot 97 Second Street, Agricola was charged in 2008 after he confessed to police that he had participated in the robbery but was not the shooter.
