Distance phenom, Claudrice McKoy and jumps ace, Chantoba Bright lit up the 2017 CARIFTA
Games with gold medal performances on Sunday to add to Guyana’s tally in Curacao where the team had already secured four medals, including two golds on Saturday.
McKoy, who had secured bronze one day earlier in the Girls’ Under-18 1500 metres, ran a very tactical race under pressure to win the 3000 metres in a time of 10:39.03s. McKoy and her rivals, two Jamaican athletes separated themselves with the Jamaicans jumping ahead for the final lap.
McKoy never panicked, but upped her pace with about 200m left, before surging ahead on the final bend in a well-timed tactical move that left the Jamaicans unable to respond to the finishing pace of McKoy. It was the second medal for McKoy.
Bright, who was a double silver medalist in 2016, leapt to gold in the Girls’U-18 Long Jump with a distance of 5.91m. It was Bright’s second event of the competition after finishing seventh in the Girls’ High Jump. She competed in the Triple Jump as well yesterday.
In other results, Compton Caesar, who became the first male sprinter to win a 100m gold at the CARIFTA Games on Saturday, sped his way to the Final of the Boys’Under-20 200m. Kenisha Phillips, Onasha Rogers and Daniel Williams all reached the semi-finals of their respective 200metre races, but did not advance.
Meanwhile, Williams contested the Boys’ High Jump, while Bright tackled the triple jump in the field events, and on the track, Caesar contested the 200m Final, and Anfernee Headecker ran the Boys’Under-20 800m race yesterday.
After the second day of competition on Sunday, Guyana has amassed a total of six medals from Caesar (gold, 100m), McKoy (gold 3000m, bronze 1500m), Bright (gold, Long Jump) Headecker (silver, 1500m) and Natricia Hooper (gold, Triple Jump).
The tally includes four gold, one silver and one bronze medal, which has Guyana fourth on the medals table behind leaders Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Bahamas in that order. The 2017 CARIFTA Games concluded yesterday in Curacao.
