Shotokan Karate-Do of Guyana international grading and clinic a success

Shaqueel Amin becomes youngest karateka of SHOKO-GUY to hold Sandan

Last Friday and Saturday saw scores of parents and students rendezvous in the National Park to witness the 2017 Shotokan Karate-Do of Guyana (Shoko-Guy) international grading exercise.

Shoko-Guy is the official representative of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) in Guyana. As such, guest examiner this year was; 8th Dan Master – Peter Warren from neighboring Barbados. Master Peter Warren is part of the ISKF’s Technical Committee and possesses a wealth of experience.
He undertook the grading of 84 students which was done in two parts on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the grading commenced at HQ Dojo in the National Park with the Dan Testing examination.
He tested the first group of 1stKyu brown belts attempting Shodan (1st Dan Blackbelt). The Dan testing was very intense, in which the karatekas demonstrated their skill and competence.
Promotions to Shodan were as follows: Aftab Khan, Christopher Chand, Thierry Williams, Javed Troyer, Akeem Morgan, MikasiWarde and Tempest Katchay. Promotions from Shodan (1st Dan) to Nidan (2nd Dan) included Stephanie Kerry, Nyota Rodrigues, Alex Rodrigues, Shaun Singh, Kristalia Chaves, Kristian Chaves and Loren Black.
The final group of Dan promotion, were from Nidan (2nd Dan) to Sandan (3rd Dan Blackbelt). As usual, the Master applauded the strong spirit demonstrated by these higher ranked Karatekas which led ultimately to their success.
The parents and other students witnessed first hand what it is like to test for a higher rank. Those examined and successfully promoted to Sandan were: Shermon Best, Marlon George, and Shaqueel Amin who now holds the record as being the youngest karateka of SHOKO-GUY to hold such a high rank.
On Saturday, the KYU examinations were conducted at the HQ National Park Dojo also. Eight students received promotions from 10 KYU (white belt) to 8 KYU (yellow belt), 11 student were promoted from 9kyu (1st yellow belt) to 8 KYU (2nd yellow belt), 9 students were promoted from 8 KYU (2nd yellow belt) to 7 KYU (orange belt), 11 students moved from 7 KYU (orange belt) to 6 KYU (green belt), 14 moved from 6 KYU (green belt) to 5 KYU (1st purple belt), 6 moved from 5 KYU (1st purple belt) to 4 KYU (2nd purple belt), 4 moved from 3rdKYU (1st brown belt) to 2 KYU ( 2nd brown belt) and 6 students moved from 2 KYU ( 2nd brown belt) to 1 KYU ( 3rd brown belt).
On Saturday evening, the organising committee met with Master Warren to go over plans to host the ISKF Caribbean Karate Championship which will be held in Guyana in November this year. Chief Instructor – Sensei Christopher Chaves advised that an official announcement is forthcoming. However, the approval has already been granted.
On Sunday, Master Warren conducted a special training clinic at 10:30hrs at the National Park Dojo which was very insightful. Students were thought the various self-defense techniques and their application. He also thought them advance Kata – Sochin.
At the conclusion of his visit, Master Warren expressed gratitude and noted the strong commitment and spirit demonstrated by the Guyanese Karatekas was commendable. Sensei Christopher Chaves also expressed gratitude for the support given, especially from the parents and students, and was pleased to have achieved 100% passes in the Dan (blackbelt) examinations.
