President of the club Alfred Mentore, who received the cheque from Digicel Public Relations Officer Vidya Sanichara, expressed gratitude to the company for their input. “This is not the first time Digicel has come on board with the club, we have seen Clive Lloyd and Lance Gibbs being recognised for their contribution towards West Indies cricket and the company contributed towards our mash camp as well, so we are thankful for their support,” he said.
The camp mainly caters for junior cricketers and Mentore explained that this is the grassroots of West Indies cricket. “We at DCC are extremely happy that Digicel has made a contribution towards the nursery of our cricket. It is at this stage that we are being able to instill the basics of the game in the youths which is vital so that we can continue to produce world class players,” he posited.
The DCC head indicated that the camp is in its ninth year and they have had a number of players representing Guyana at the junior levels. “We have definitely played our part in the success of the Guyana junior teams over the years. Currently three of our players are in England with the West Indies U16 team; Ashmead Nedd, Sachin Singh and Qumar Torrington, and that speaks volumes,” Mentore related.
Sanichara explained that Digicel is happy to be part of the clinic and will continue to support it. She lauded that club for their efforts and urged the youths to remain committed towards the sport and their Education for they both go hand in hand.
Digicel Ambassador Christopher Barnwell, who has joined the programme, said he is happy that Digicel has partnered with him.
He indicated that it is a pleasure for him to be granted an opportunity to give back to the youths. “Coming out here and seeing these youths performing brings a lot of joy to me, I have never really had an opportunity to be part of such camp so I must thanked both the club and Digicel for this opportunity,” he noted. Barnwell handed over a bat and a pair of batting gloves to Mentore which will be given to one of the most promising players at the conclusion of the camp.
The clinic will conclude next week.
