Cycling action will continue in Berbice tomorrow when the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) in association with the Felix family brings off the 3rd Annual Grenville Felix Memorial 50-mile road race which is open to riders, countrywide.
The event which is coordinated by FACC Coach Randolph Roberts is held in honour of the late engineer who passed away three years ago at the age of 96. Felix was one of Guyana’s first and oldest engineer’s at the time of his demise and worked with the Bookers and Guyana Sugar Corporation apart from various parts of the world.
This is the 5th cycling event being held in Felix’s honour, the first two were held in celebration of his birthday. This was subsequently changed to a memorial event following his demise. According to Roberts this year race is expected to be bigger with more incentives at stake. Competitors will move off tomorrow from outside Felix’ former home as a child at Betsy Ground, East Canje but will be given the flag from his residence at Canefield East Canje, Berbice.
They will then proceed to Nand Persaud and Company Limited at No. 36 Corentyne before turning back to finish in front of his Canefield residence. The nation’s leading cyclists are expected to be on show, attractive prizes are at stake with the first eight to cross the line being rewarded.
The top three juniors and females will also receive prizes while there will also be prizes for top veteran riders. Eight sprint prizes are up for grabs. The Grenville Felix Memorial lien trophy is at stake but for a rider to keep same, they must three times.
When the race was held for Felix’ birthday and open to Berbice cyclists only, Andrew Hicks and Neil Reece were the respective winners. Mario King took the first race when it was opened to riders nationally.
