Watched by the Mayor and Regional Chairman of Region #7, visitors Sir Leon’s Lesson upstaged DC Caesar Fox Secondary in a five goal thriller to advance to the semi finals of the Digicel Schools Football Championship at the Bartica Community Center ground last night.
The biggest crowd at this venue for quite some time left disappointed that the home team did not advance but were treated to some exciting football, especially in the second half.
The first 45 minutes did not produce any goals but gave a good indication that neither team was going to allow the other to dictate proceedings.
Sir Leon’s Captain David George led by example in heavy conditions, blasting a double, the first and winning goals to seal an exciting but tough win for his team.
George signaled early intentions as he sent DC Caesar Fox custodian, Reese Gomez into early action as he had to tip the ball over the bar within the first 5 minutes.
Sir Leon’s goalie, Christian Benjamin, too was called into early action as DC Caesar Fox fired back. Both sides tried their best to trump the challenging conditions.
The ground staff and Digicel officials did an excellent job in ensuring that play was possible after very heavy rain left the field waterlogged for the entire morning and early afternoon. Extra drains were dug to allow the water to drain so that play was possible, luckily, the facility has floodlights which were used to ensure that match was played.
But all the action, at least goal wise was reserved for the second half. The strength of George was too much for the home team to handle and it was just a matter of time before he exploded. That he did in the 53rd minute when he put Sir Leon’s Lessons ahead.
But while the large crowd was silenced for a few moments, they were joyful three minutes later when a world class header drew DC Caesar Fox level. A well placed cross saw Uriah King rising above the Sir Leon’s defenders to head the ball past Benjamin in the 56th minute.
The advantage was restored for Sir Leon’s Lesson in the 67th minute compliments of another classical header, this time from Sylvester Richardson.
DC Caesar Fox, whilst not as robust and physical as their opponents, used their experience and skills to counter when it mattered.
They neutralised proceedings for a second time in the match with 3 minutes to the end of regulation time when they were awarded a free kick just inside their opponents half.
Stepping up to take the shot was the lanky Ashton Ward and the end result was a ripper of a goal. The ball dipped just under the cross bar but over the fingers of Benjamin to settle at the back of the nets to send the fans into a frenzy.
But their joy was short lived as George again took proceedings into his own hands when he blasted in the winning goal with one minute to full-time, it was a dagger like goal.
The win has secured a place for Sur Leon’s Lessons in the semi finals as they are two hurdles away from championship glory.
