Kaieteur Sports – Sri Lanka counter-punched their way to a series-levelling win last night after a string of match-winning performances in both departments which helped subdue the hosts by 37-runs under lights at Sabina Park.
Sri Lanka posted a formidable 194-6 in their 20 overs.
After being inserted to bat first by West Indies captain Rovman Powell, Sri Lanka’s top order initially encountered turbulence after opener Pathum Nissanka was dismissed early for just 7.
Veteran Kusal Mendis provided a brief, aggressive spark by hitting 31 off 19 balls, but his departure left Sri Lanka looking for stability.
Enter opening batter Kamil Mishara, who anchored the innings for the visitors and stabilized the innings with a composed knock of 61* (4×4 3×6).
But the true turning point of the innings came when former captain Dasun Shanaka joined Mishara at the crease.
Shanaka completely cooked the Windies death-bowling attack, blasting a blistering 58 off just 24 balls with 5 fours and 6 sixes during the pair’s 104-run 5th wicket partnership.
Windies pacer Shamar Joseph followed his 3-fer in the opening game with another 3-wicket haul, going for just 32 runs while Matthew Forde (2-38) was the other bowler to find success.
The chase was shaky after losing openers, skipper Shai Hope and Brandon King for cheap before Shimron Hetmyer (36) and Powell (43) sought to recalibrate the innings.
But some disciplined bowling led by fast-bowler Dushmantha Chameera who was brilliant (3-9), skipper Wanindu Hasaranga (3-38) alongside fellow spinner Dunith Wellalage (2-28); kept the home team in check.
Windies would collapse for 157 all out in the 19th over despite some resistance from Akeal Hosein (14) and Joseph (11*).
With the series levelled 1-1, tonight’s 3rd match for the chips will be all the more interesting. (Clifton Ross)
