(Kaieteur News) – On March 15, when Stabroek News published its final edition, this newspaper carried a Front Page Comment titled A Sad Day for Guyana. We wrote then that the closure of Stabroek News dramatically reshaped Guyana’s media landscape and left Kaieteur News as the only independent daily newspaper in the country.
We warned that such a media environment could not be considered healthy for any democracy. A vibrant democracy requires a diversity and multiplicity of independent voices, competing ideas, and robust scrutiny of those who wield power. The concentration of media influence in the hands of those aligned to the government and ruling party is never in the best interest of the public.
Since then, our concerns have only deepened. Guyana’s media landscape remains heavily populated by those who have effectively sold their souls to the government, There are others who masquerade as bona fide journalists and others who have while willingly become water-fetchers for the government by doing its bidding, sanitizing its actions, and whitewashing policies that deserve critical examination.
The consequence is that citizens are too often deprived of the balanced and fearless reporting that is essential to informed public discourse. Democracy suffers when scrutiny is weakened and when too many voices sing from the same political hymn sheet.
It is against this backdrop that Kaieteur News welcomes the establishment of Kiskadee Watch, an online publication headed by former Stabroek News Editor-in-Chief Anand Persaud.
Guyana desperately needs more independent voices prepared to examine what is taking place in our country from every angle and on all sides of the political divide. We need more journalists and publications willing to ask difficult questions, expose corruption, challenge injustice, and hold the powerful accountable.
Kaieteur News therefore extends its best wishes to Kiskadee Watch and pledges its moral support to this new online publication. The challenges facing independent journalism are considerable, but so too is the responsibility to serve the public interest.
Together, let us work towards a better Guyana for all.
