“You are a positive role model to every youth in Rose Hall Town
and the perfect example that success in Life is only achieved throughout hard work, discipline and faith in the God we serve,” Those were the words of RHTYSC, M.S Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster to National Under 16 Basketball player Kevon Wiggins as he was honoured by the Club’s Pepsi Under 19 team for his outstanding performance in the recent Caribbean Basketball Under 16 Championship in Georgetown. Wiggin’s outstanding performance as a small forward was one of the main reasons why Guyana finished as the runner up behind the eventual winner, the Bahamas.
Foster stated that the RHTYSC, M.S is very proud of Wiggins, the first resident of Rose Hall Town to play for a Guyana Basketball team at any level and for his outstanding performance on the Court. He also praised the attentive national player for his overall discipline on and off the court and urged him to remain focused. The experienced sports official urged Wiggins to continue to concentrate on his educational career, to choose his friends carefully and to always avoid the temptations of Satan and his evil world of drugs and crime. Wiggins was advised to share his formula of success with his fellow youth basketballers in the township, so others would follow in his footsteps. Foster disclosed that while the RHTYSC main focus is cricket, it has invested heavily in other sports like football, basketball, volleyball, scrabble, athletics, table tennis among others and would continue to do so as he highly believes that sports and education are the best alternatives to a life on the road for youths.
Wiggins accompanied by his proud parents Rhonda Lewis and Eon Wiggins expressed gratitude to the RHTYSC and the Pepsi Under 19 team for honouring him. He stated that he was proud to be the first resident of Guyana’s smallest township to play Basketball at the national level and expressed confidence that with proper investment, others would follow in his footsteps. Wiggins also revealed that he would be pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a professional basketball player and thanked the RHTYSC Secretary/CEO for his timely advice.
Captain of Pepsi ‘B’ team and senior player Simon Naidu both congratulated Wiggins before handing over a Youth Role Model Medal and Trophy, a Wilson Basketball and a financial donation to an elated Wiggins. Kevon Wiggins grandfather is a founder member of the RHTYSC, who served as its first Treasurer while his father Eon is a former RHTYSC first Division Cricketer.
