Defending champion Sparta Boss, Tucville, Globe Yard and Broad Street marched into the quarterfinal round following the start of the round of 16 stage in the Ministry of Health/Petra Organization Soft Shoe Championship football tournament on Thursday.
Sparta Boss edged Albouystown 4-2 at the Square of the Revolution. Devon ‘The Tormentor’ Millington scored a brace in the third and 31st minute, while strike partner Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson netted a double in the second and 33rd minutes.
Scoring for the Albouystown unit was Kemo Scott in the 22nd and 25th minutes. Meanwhile, Tucville brushed aside Campbellville 6-2. Tefon Daly booted in hat-trick in the 12th, 14th and 25th minutes. Support came from Dennis Edwards in the fourth and 13th minute with a double, while sibling Rafael Edwards netted in the 28th minute. For Campbellville, Marlon Nedd and Ozeal Small scored in the second and fifth minutes respectively.
Globe Yard brushed aside North Ruimveldt 3-1. Delon Lanferman fired home a double in the ninth and 11th minutes, while Andrew Murray Jr, scored in the 10th minute. For the losers, Gerald Gittens scored in the 27th minute.
And Broad Street got the better of Channel-9 Warriors 3-1 compliments of a Jamal Cozier brace in the 21st and 22nd minutes. He was supported by Jimmy Gravesande who netted in the 25th minute.
For Channel-9 Stephen McLean found the back of the net in the 18th minute.
The winner of the event will collect $300,000 and the Championship trophy, while the second placed side will receive $200,000 and the runners-up accolade.
On the other hand, the third placed side will receive $100,000 and the respective trophy while the fourth place finishers will pocket $50,000 and the corresponding title.
Prizes will be awarded to the event’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Highest Goal Scorer. Among the sponsors of the event are the Ministry of Public Health, GTT, Lucky Dollar, Nigel Supermarket, Junior’s Jewellery, Star Party Rentals and 2-J’s General Store.
