(Kaieteur News) – Canadian miner Omai Gold Mines Corp. recently announced that first phase of metallurgical test work at its Omai Gold Project has improved projected gold recovery rates to as high as 95%. This means that the company is able to extract a greater percentage of gold contained in ore during processing.
Omai believes that this result strengthens the economic outlook for the proposed mining operation in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Since its return to Guyana’s mining sector in 2020, Omai, through its subsidiary Avalon Gold Exploration Inc., has identified 2.5 million ounces of gold in the indicated category at the historic Omai Gold project. The company holds 100% interest in the project which hosts two orogenic gold deposits: the shear-hosted Wenot Deposit and the adjacent intrusion-hosted Gilt Deposit.
Omai noted that both gold deposits are responsive to industrially proven processing technologies. It also announced that the first phase of metallurgical test work on its Wenot and Gilt gold deposits achieved gold extraction rates ranging from 93% to 95% using conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing. Gold extraction averaged 93% from ore grading 1.0 grams of gold per tonne and increased to 95% for material grading 3.2 grams per tonne.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elaine Ellingham said, “The results from this first phase of metallurgical testing are very favourable, and consistent with the historical production results.” She added that the results will assist engineers preparing the project’s Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), expected within the next four to six weeks.
It was stated too that the tests determined that a grind size of 80% passing 75 microns provided the best balance between recovery and processing efficiency. Omai said gold dissolution rates were rapid with a 32-hour retention time for the preliminary plant design.
Moreover, according to the Omai, metallurgical testing also found that both the Wenot and Gilt deposits mineralogies are clean with no deleterious components such as organic carbon, tellurides, or antimony. It also found that the deposits have very low soluble copper, lead or zinc content.
Ellingham noted that following the company’s updated Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) released in April, evaluations now suggest the two deposits could support a processing plant capable of handling between 20,000 and 25,000 tonnes of ore per day (tpd), up from the earlier projected 15,000 to 18,000 tpd.
The CEO noted that since its return Omai has been able to complete five MREs – each being successively larger.
In April, the company announced an updated MRE for the overall gold project showing 400,000 ounces increase above the August 2025, MRE – bringing the project’s indicated MRE to 2.5 million ounces. The updated MRE puts the Wenot Indicated MRE at 1,453,000 ounces, and the Wenot Inferred MRE at 3,999,000 ounces. At the Gilt Deposit, the Inferred MRE stands at 1,465,000 ounces, and its Indicated MRE is now at 1,042,000 ounces. Overall, Omai’s updated MRE estimates 2,495,000 ounces of gold in the indicated category and 5,465,000 ounces in the inferred category.
For those unfamiliar, an “Inferred Resource” is one that is based on limited sampling and is based on reasonably assumed, but limited information, while an “Indicated Resource” is a resource whose quantity, grade (quality), shape, size and continuity can be more confidently reported.
