Kaieteur Sports – Statistician Charwayne Walker has informed that there is some sad news to share, former Guyana Sports Club (GSC), Guyana National Service (GNS) and GUYNEC opening batsman, Gavin ‘Rasta man’ Lewis has passed away over the weekend after suffering a stroke.
Lewis highest first division score was 94 versus the GDF at Camp Ayangana, an innings he always talked about because the army attack had the likes of Leslain Lambert, Dennis Hewitt and Jerry Angus. He was playing for the Guyana Sports Club at the time.
Walker disclosed that, Lewis after leaving the GSC played for the GNS with Orin Samuels, Aubrey Quamina, Sammy Boodoo, Leon Ashe, Selwyn Smith and Brian Wiltshire among others.
After the GNS was demoted in 1992 he proudly represented GUYNEC Cricket Club with the late Clyde Butts at helm.
Well-known as ‘Rasta man’ among his peers, Lewis was a fun loving and very jovial person who was loved by all. He was always encouraging the younger players to strive for excellence.
He will be dearly missed. Lewis was 63 years old at the time of his death.
The cricket fraternity in Georgetown is extremely sadden by Mr Lewis’ passing. Although he never represented Demerara or Guyana, his passion for the game was phenomenal.
Walker notes that, at the Guyana National Service first division team, Lewis played an integral role in mentoring players like the late Preston Thomas who went on to represent the Windward Islands in first class cricket. Also, Colburn David, Rawle Caryll, the late Patrice Welcome, Charwayne Walker, Hubert Lewis, Reggie Rodrigues, Paul Cave and Regan Baxter.
Gavin Lewis also played for the Demerara Cricket Club at the second division level before joining the Guyana Sports Club in 1982.
Lewis was known as a fanatical fan of the late Andrew ‘monsters’ Lyght. Condolences is extended to his family and friends at this time of grief.
