New Amsterdam Technical Institute, showing better football skills, took control before steamrolling New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School 3-0 to win the 2016 edition of the Patrick “Patto” April Inter Schools U18
Memorial knockout football competition which was played for school in the New Amsterdam/ Canje areas.
The final was played at the Scott’s Church Ground Princess Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam.
The two teams had scored contrasting victories in their respective semifinal games with NATI edging out TASS on penalty kicks, while NAMS had upstaged BHS 3-2.
However, after a keenly contested first half the NATI lads took control and dominated play as the NAMS players failed to produce the effort that went with them in the semifinal encounter against BHS.
NATI, who was playing for the first time in the competition, took control after wearing down their opponents as they hammered home all their goals in the second half. Terrain Williams had a good day as he led the way with a double with Trevitte Grimmond scoring the other.
At the presentation ceremony that followed the winning NATI team was presented with the winning Trophy and 15 gold medals, while NAMS received a trophy and 15 silver medals. The TASS team with lost to NATI on penalty kicks was awarded third place.
In the individual category NATI took the lion’s share of the awards. The most valuable player award went to Terran Williams; he was also the best striker on show with three goals, best goalkeeper-Joel Davis, best defender Julian Success. The award for the best midfielder on show went to Shaquan Spencer of NAMS. They all received trophies compliments of Commander Amsterdam and the Guyana Police Force.
At the end of the game, assistant coordinator, former national Kenrick Bowry, congratulated both teams for making it to the final. He had special words of commendation for NATI for winning and the outstanding players for being on top of their game. Bowry was also high in praise for the Guyana Police Force for responding so readily to the call. He praised Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam for taking time out from his busy schedule to view most of the games and with his leadership noted a lot of good things are in store for the Division.
Coordinator Neil Humphrey noted that after discussions with Amsterdam, the Commander readily agreed that the police will sponsor the competition since, April was a member of the force and the tournament will be played among schools.
Amsterdam thanked the HOOMFC for organizing the tournament and congratulated them for a job well done. He noted without any reservation that the HOOMFC is one of the top organisers of Football in the county.
He said that partnerships with the wider community are welcomed by the GPF since it is good for the country and the maintenance of discipline.
Amsterdam reminisces on his playing days with April whom he played with in the defence for the Guyana Police Force. Amsterdam stated that he used to play last back while April would play just in front of him or one of the wing backs. Amsterdam’s game would become easy as April who was known as the “clean up” man use to make the work easy for him. He was very fit, full of energy and liked to tackle. “Strikers would sometime leave the ball and run.”
He also joined in congratulating the winning team and all the other teams that participated in the tournament.
He gave the go ahead that the tournament would become annual. Whilst encouraging the students to train hard, he also told them to stay in school and take in their education.
Seven schools participated in the 11 a side affair; namely New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS), Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Tutorial Academy Secondary School (CSS), Canje Secondary School (CSS) and New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI).
