The race to become the inaugural NAMILCO/GFF Flour Power National Under-17 league champions in the capital city of Georgetown began in earnest yesterday with four clubs recording victories at the Tucville ground.

Two of the clubs are Elite League clubs, Fruta Conquerors playing the final of four matches eased to a 3-1 win over fellow elite side Georgetown Football Club (GFC); Eastville ran away 2-0 winners over Order of Discipline; Alpha United downed fellow elite league club Pele by a similar 2-0 margin, while Santos FC trounced Camptown FC 5-0 in the day’s opening encounter.
Fruta Conquerors FC boasting a proud history at the youth level in the city will be aiming to rekindle that form and crossed the first hurdle in their path when they got past GFC. Enjoying home turf, Conquerors took the lead on 12 minutes through a Jeremy Garrett goal but that advantage was cancelled out in the 19th minute by GFC’s Tamiel Hudson.
Before the end of the first half though, Conquerors would restore their one goal cushion through a Malachi Adonis strike in the 25th minute. Both sides played well but it was the home team which would have scored again, this time on 50 minutes through a Raushawn Rich goal that sealed the match Conquerors way, 3-1.
Eastville netted two unanswered goals to turn back the challenge of Order of Discipline. Teon Vankenrick in the 30th minute and Shamar Carrington in the 40th were the goal scorers for Eastville.
In the day’s second match, it was a showdown between two sides that would always produce fierce encounters at the senior level. Alpha United dominated their Pele rivals to wrap up an opening win by a 2-0 margin.
Shaquon Favourite opened Alpha’s account in the 33rd minute latching on to a loose ball in the area while his teammate Tevin McDonald was on target seven minutes later virtually sealing the win in the 40th minute.
Santos opened their account for championship glory in flawless fashion with a 5-0 whipping of Camptown. Leading their charge was Nazeem Algeman who scored a brace, one either side of play.
He {Algeman} hit the back of the nets in the 19th minute and completed his brace in the 47th minute. Eon Adams was on target in the 24th minute, Captain Cosmos De Santos Jr. got into the act in the 28th minute with the final goal coming off the boot of Ryan Dowding in the 59th minute.
Four more matches will be played on Saturday at the same venue. (Franklin Wilson)
