Opener Bhaskar Yadram struck a fine century while skipper Joshua Persaud
grabbed a five-wicket haul to give Georgetown/Mahaicony a 78-run victory over Essequibo when the final of the Elite Stage Guyana Cricket Board/National Secondary Schools league was contested yesterday.
The right-handed Yadram hammered a fluent 106 to lead Georgetown/Mahaicony to a challenging 257-8 off 50 overs after they were inserted at Boudra. Yadram added 155 for the first wicket with Sachin Singh to set the foundation for his team before Singh was dismissed by Joel Fortune two shy of a half century.
Yadram who timed the ball well clobbered ten fours and one six before he fell to Fortune after facing 102 balls. Joshua Persaud hit a composed 48, but after he went with the score on 165, Essequibo fought back well, picking up wickets at regular intervals with only Kurt Lovell (17) of the remaining batsmen reaching double figures; Alphius Bookie (02), Christopher Campbell (09), Ashmead Nedd (06) and Mark Baptiste (02) all fell cheaply.
Fortune finished with 2-36 while Beesham Moses claimed 2-44, Joshua Jones, Bomesh Ramdahin and Shemar Dusraj claimed a wicket apiece. Pacer Colin Barlow removed Orlando Jailall (06) and Ramdahin (05) to reduce Essequibo to 14-2 before Rayon Venture and Trevor Collins took the score to 51.
Persaud then trapped Collins lbw for eight, but Venture and Randy Rooplall steadied the chase fairly with a half-century stand for the fourth-wicket. The duo batted with maturity as they rotated the strike well in favourable sunshine before Rooplall was needlessly run out after hitting three fours in scoring 23.
Venture inched closer to what would have been a well deserved half century, but provided left arm spinner Nedd with a return catch to be dismissed for 48. Joshua Jones cracked three fours before he was caught off Persaud for 38 while Quintin Foster went for 14.
Persaud then picked up a few more wickets including that of Beesham Moses who was stumped for 13 off the last ball of the innings as Essequibo were bowled out for 179. Persaud ended with 5-20 off seven overs while Barlow had 2-14. Nedd and Jospice Jones took one each.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Territorial Development Officer Colin Stuart congratulated the teams and thanked the sponsors. He said that he was satisfied with the skill level of the players and urged them to continue with their training adding that nets will be distributed to some areas shortly.
The competition was sponsored by Banks DIH, Digicel and Rainforest Water. (Zaheer Mohamed)
