Santos FC and New Amsterdam United booked their places in the semi-finals of the 5th Annual GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup after securing similar hard fought victories against Rosignol United and Guyana Police Force (GPF) respectively on Friday night, at the No.5 ground in West Berbice.
Georgetown-based Santos FC squeezed past Rosignol United 3-2 thanks to goals from Josh Parvatan, who opened the scoring in the 15th minute, before Tyrese Forde added a second three minutes onward which gave them a handy 2-0 lead.
However, Mark Wronge pulled one back after twenty-five minutes as Rosignol United trailed 1-2 at the break.
Coming out after the resumption, the Berbicians went immediately on the offensive and got the equaliser two minutes after the restart through Winston Benjamin to set up the contest on a knife’s edge.
Dominating most of the possession, Rosignol United failed to capitalise and paid the penalty when in the dying moments of the game, Santos got the go-ahead goal off the boots of Travis Fitzpatrick, one minute from full time to secure a deserved victory and a place in the last four.
In the other encounter, New Amsterdam United (NA United) resisted arrest to get away with a narrow 2-1 triumph over the GPF in extra time.
Delroy Ferdinand had given New Amsterdam United the early ascendancy after netting in the 12th minute, but the Lawmen responded in the 32nd through Jonathan Fredericks to level the proceedings.
Both teams battled for the lead as the game took a see-saw scenario with missed opportunities the order of the second period until the final whistle signaled extra time for a possible outcome.
Ferdinand, who had scored in the opening period and was a constant tormentor to the opposing backline, returned to grab his second of the night in the 111th minute and in the process hand his team the win.
Two million dollars and the championship trophy will be awarded to the winning team, while the second, third and fourth place finishers will receive $ 1 million, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively along with trophies.
