National Youth player Andre Hector spearhead Den Amstel to an emphatic 5-nill drubbing of Grove in the final of the two-day Sydroy Nedd Inter Ward/Village 7-a-aside KO F/ball last Thursday at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground to cart off the Assistant Police Commissioner Brain Joseph Trophy and $100,000.
The competition was organised by the Mayor’s Cup Organizing Committee and the family of the late Sydroy Nedd, led by Nedd’s younger brother Senior Superintendent of Police Nigel Hoppie.
Hoppie, speaking at the presentation, thanked the good size Eid-Ul-Azah holiday crowd for their support of his sibling who he passed away in September 2011.
Hoppie promised to make the tournament, which this year coincided with what would have been Nedd’s 60th birth anniversary, an annual one.
Hoppie promised to hold next year’s competition at the Uitvlugt ground in West Coast Demerara since the late Nedd was a former President of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) as well as the Uitvlugt Football Club. He was also Manager of Guyana Football Federation teams and Assistant coordinator of the Mayor’s Cup Organizing Committee.
The runners-up Grove pocketed $50,000 and the Nigel Hoppie trophy, while Pouderoyen, who finished third, collected $30,000 and a trophy and Goed Fortuin, who ended fourth, took home $20,000 and a trophy.
Grove hammered Wales 4-0, Pouderoyen beat Sara’s Lodge 2-1, Goed Fortuin defeated Uitvlugt 3-2 and Den Amstel beat Stewartville 4-nil in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-finals, Grove beat Goed Fortuin 2-0 and Den Amstel whipped Pouderoyen 4-0.
Before the third place match-up which was won by Pouderoyen over Goed Fortuin 2-0, West Demerara Masters got the better of Georgetown Masters 1-nil.
Hector was the tournament’s leading goal scorer, having found the back of the net eight times.
