The new Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) President Horace Burrowes and Executive will have the opportunity to set the tone for the rest of their four-year tenure when they preside over the 2015 National
Championships set for this weekend.
After being elected Saturday last, the new GCF will run off the Time Trials and Road Race tomorrow and Sunday respectively where the champions in the respective categories will be crowned.
Unlike the past two years, the Time Trials and Road Race will not be held on the Linden Soesdyke Highway, this year’s Time Trials will be held from Chateau Margot on the East Coast of Demerara to the Gas Station just before Conversation Tree and will commence at 07:00hrs tomorrow.
Defending champions are Raynauth Jeffrey (Senior), Raymond Newton (Veteran), Claire Fraser-Green (Female) while a new junior champion will be crowned given the fact that last year’s champion, Michael Anthony has graduated to the senior ranks.
Sunday’s Road Race will be contested on a 7.14 mile circuit with the start and finish line being on the Southern Carriage way of the East Coast Highway opposite the Ocean View Inernational Hotel.
The race will commence and proceed West along the Southern Carriage way through the Russian Embassy turn and Kitty Public Road; making a sharp right turn while exiting Kitty onto the Northern Carriageway.
The race then continues East up to Spaarendam with another sharp right turn onto the Southern Carriage way then to the point of Start/Finish Line for the completion of a lap. The course is predominantly flat and rolling with windy conditions.
The races are as follows:
Juveniles / Ladies – Start Time: 7:30 am
Distance: 3 Laps (21 miles/34 km)
Veterans: Start Time: 8:45 am
Distance: 7 Laps (49.98 miles/79.96 km)
Juniors: Start Time: 9:05 am
Distance: 6 Laps (43 miles/69 km)
Seniors: Start Time: 11:30 am
Distance: 13 Laps (93 miles/149 km)
Rules: Two Feeding Zone will be designated (Ocean View going up & just after UG road coming down).
There will be 2 neutral service vehicles with spare wheels on the course. No other vehicles will be allowed on the course.
No feeding on last lap. Feeding commences after 1 lap. There will be no free laps.
Defending champions are Andrew Hicks (Juveniles), Stephano Husbands (Juniors), Geron Williams (Seniors), Raymond Newton (Veterans) and Claire Fraser-Green (Female).
Any disputes shall be forwarded to the Chief Race Marshal within 15 minutes of completion of Race by the Club Representative and the cyclists.
