Walcott Francis, Simon Peters and Semona Lawrence were among the winners when the Region Nine Athletics Club staged their Pre-Independence 10k race recently. The race commenced from Takatu Bridge
in Brazil and continued in the various streets in Lethem before finishing at Tabatinga. Francis copped the male 20-40 years category in a time of 40 minutes while Daeis Hendricks placed second, Dylon Edwards third and Terry Parks fourth. Leonita Wencelaus won the female segment, while Rolalin Clement took the runner up spot.
Simon Peters carted off the male under 20 division ahead of Nyron Edwards and Frankie Parks in that order. National schools female road race champion Semona Lawrence underlined her status as one of the most talented young athlete by carting off the under 20 title; Rovianeed Edwards took the runner position and Roshanna King third.
The female over 50 division was taken by Wendy Martin while Oval Mariete claimed the male 40-50 division ahead of Brian Andries. Dennis Grimmond overcame Guy Marco to win the male over- 50 event.
The athletes were rewarded with cash prizes while Grimmond and Parks received trophies for being the oldest and youngest competitors respectively.
The event was sponsored Raimundo/Jonathan Baksh, Leslie Mendonca, Katarino, Sugreem Singh, Fredsond Conceicao, D. Coates and Sabrina Peters of Marudi. Linclon Lamazon of Bom Fim, Ken Grant k and S of St. Ignatius and Joyce Lawrence Makawa Enterprise of Aishalton. Chairman of the club Kenrick Lewis congratulated the athletes and thanked the sponsors.
