Even as the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) continues to experience difficulty with securing
sponsorship to get a team to the Pan Am Qualifiers in Mexico, a number of boxers will start encampment from today. A squad of ten boxers will be housed at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis gym in Albouystown for the next two weeks.
Five of the boxers have been selected to travel to Mexico for the Qualifiers. GBA president Steve Ninvalle disclosed yesterday that $1.5M (one million and five hundred thousand dollars) is needed to get the team to Tijuana, Mexico.
“At best sponsorship is sluggish and we are weighing our options. We cannot overstate the importance of having our young fighters compete in Tijuana as it is part of our preparations for the Olympics,” Ninvalle said.
Just over a week ago GBA selected the team that also included two officials. AIBA-certified Three Star coach Sebert Blake is the manager/coach, while Francisco Roldan would be his assistant.
USA-based super heavyweight Quincy ‘Biggy’ Small leads the team of selected boxers that includes middleweight Dennis Thomas, Jr. welterweight Jason Phillips, lightweight Diwani Lampkin and bantamweight Delon Charles.
“I can openly state that if we do not secure the sponsorship in a timely manner then we would be forced to pull the plug on Mexico,” Ninvalle reiterated. “At present, it is approximately US$1000 for an air ticket. We have not spoken about accommodation as yet. We are optimistic about medaling in Tijuana but at the moment the real fight is securing sponsorship.”
However, Ninvalle added that notwithstanding the sloth in acquiring financial support, the GBA found it fitting to encamp the team. Terrence Poole – Guyana’s other Three Star coach, Wincell Thomas, Roldan and Blake will overlook the sessions at the Andrew Lewis gym.
