Competing on the Pro Circuit for Championsystems/Stans NoTubes, Guyanese Geron
Williams finished second in the 16th annual Turkey Hill Country Classic / Pennsylvania State Road Race Championships which covered 65 miles on Saturday last.
The race which was contested over a rolling course that had an elevation gain of about 4600ft at the end (4600ft of climbing total for the 65 miles) saw Williams winning the field sprint after the winner, Michael Chauner went away to win. Williams’ time was 2hours 28minutes.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Williams said the race was quite testing especially since he was the only rider from his team that competed.
”So I had to be extra vigilant and also conservative if I were to get a result. I was able to get myself into an early break that in my opinion had some of the better riders on that day and we only last a third of the race before we got caught. So accessing that, I know that a break could go and stay away but it would be difficult. Michael Chauner attacked with about 1.5 laps to go and he was able to stay, the bunch sprint was a mad dash for the line but I was able to maneuver my way through the maze of riders fighting fiercely for position to win the bunch sprint with a bike through.”
Despite not being a 100% since the season commenced, Williams, apart from competing in two events when he was home in Guyana but was unable to contest the Chico stage Race in Northern California due to being ill.
”After that I spent 2 months training in Ventura, California where we also had our teams training camp. My first major event was the Sea Otter Classic where I placed 7th in the Criterium event on the first day at Leguna Seca.”
Williams then travelled to Pennsylvania on the East Coast where I stay with Guyanese international cyclist Aubrey Gordon.
”I placed a disappointing 11th in the Rock Lititz Cycling Classic on April 26th but I walked away and focused on the Turkey Hill Country Classic where I was able to Podium. So this is by far my best Performance of this 2015 season.”
Next up for Williams is the NCC Wilmington Grand Prix on May 16th which will be followed the next weekend (May 23-25) by the Kilington Stage Race in Vermont.
