After the first round concluded on Thursday last, cricket fans are already predicting a Demerara / Berbice final. Both teams recorded victories in their respective opening round games; Berbice overpowered the national Under-19 team by 105 runs while Demerara scraped past Essequibo by two wickets.
Arguably, the two most celebrated teams at the Inter County level will renew rivalry today in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Senior 50-overs tournament at Wales. Essequibo will take on the National U-19 team in the next fixture at Demerara Cricket Club.
Berbice opener Kandasammy Surujnarine timed the ball well in his fine 81 in the opening game while Devon Clements, Narsingh Deonarine, Jonathan Foo and Veerasammy Permaul played meaningful roles.
One can look forward to an epic battle with the likes of Christopher Barnwell, Steven Jacobs, Zaheer Mohamed and Trevon Griffith on the opposition side. Despite Essequibo being bowled out for 152 in the first round, they have a talented batting line up with the Fredericks brothers, Norman and Royan as well as Kevon Boodie and Ricardo Adams.
Anthony Adams and Ricardo are capable slow bowlers, but they will need support. Kemo Paul who plays for Noitgedacht SC in Wakenaam has shown why he is regarded as the most talented U-19 all rounder in the Caribbean with a fine showing against the Berbicians.
He has caught the eyes of all those who saw him and has the ability to play the game at the highest level. A lot will depend on him, Tagenarine Chandrpaul, Shimron Hetmyer, Steven Sankar and Balchan Baldeo if they are to record their first win.
However a passage to the final is still open to all the teams, but the results of this round should decide which teams make it through. Matches commence at 09:00hrs.
