President of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) and Vice-President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Michael Singh, tendered his resignation yesterday “from all aspects of basketball in Guyana”.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport yesterday following the newspaper’s receipt of the resignation letter, Singh said that he will not allow a particular journalist, who is also a basketball referee, to continue to threaten his life and his character.
Singh was referring directly to a faceoff on social network, Facebook, in which the journalist and referee used several expletives and even referenced use of a gun in response to Singh mentioning of him failing the FIBA Officials Certification Examination.
Yesterday’s social network squabble was the second between the two. Singh said that he has done too much for the sport to allow his character to continue to be assaulted. He believes his track record on the sport’s development speaks for itself.
The owner of Paladin Security, which provides all forms of security needs, took over as head of the GABA last year after successfully developing Colts Basketball Club, following the death of Phillip George.
He has consistently organised basketball in Georgetown at both Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and Burnham Basketball Court, finishing Leagues for the Division I and III Clubs and also Division II Clubs for the first time this decade.
Singh is extremely active in basketball development in Georgetown and played a crucial role in ensuring Guyana compete at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in the British Virgin Islands.
Singh’s full resignation letter is below:
“With all the events happening around basketball within the last 48 hours and prior, it’s with great regret that I tender my resignation from all aspects of basketball in Guyana.
Over the past two years, I have worked feverishly to resuscitate and bring back basketball without significant sponsorship, because of my love for the game, making it harder to accept, when parties attempt to discredit and degrade us as administrators.
To my President of the GABF and loyal friend, keep the fight up, I don’t know a better man for the job. In six months, you were able to field two teams to the CBC Games, I know it was a task.
To my affiliates and teams, thank you for your support and assistance, I wish you the best in the future.
Sincerely,
Michael Singh
President GABA/VP GABF”
