Chattergoon 103, Permaul 101* propel Albion into final; Police also advance
Centuries from Guyana opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon and former Berbice Under-19 all-rounder Veerapen Permaul spearheaded Albion Community Center to a place in the final with victory over Port Mourant in their semi final of the 2013 Ramcharitar Construction Service first division 50 overs knockout competition in Berbice.
Playing at Port Mourant, Albion won the toss and elected to bat first, they benefitted from a 79 run opening stand between Chattergoon and Under-15 batsman Adrian Sukhwa who fell for 23. Permaul, the younger brother of Veerasammy, came in and together with Chattergoon, put on another 137 for the second wicket before Chattergoon went for 103 (14×4).
Next to go was Anthony Bramble for 5 at 245-3 but Permaul found an able partner in Guyana specialist leg spinner Devendra Bishoo, they featured in an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 71 to see Albion to 316-3 in their 50 overs; Permaul ended on 101 (10×4) and Bishoo 38*.
When Port Mourant replied they were faced with an all spin attack which limited them to 204 in 43.5 overs despite an enterprising 62 (3×4 3×6) from Tony McKenzie and 42 from Nicholas Cameron.
Bowling for Albion, West Indies Under-19 left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie snared 4-44 from 10 overs. Permaul, bowling off spin had 2-20 from 5 overs, off spinner Asif Ali 2-34 from 6.5 overs, Albion won by 112 runs.
Meanwhile, Police also earned the right to advance to the final after surprisingly and comfortably defeating Young Warriors at the latter’s home ground in Cumberland.
In the match reduced to 35 overs per side due to preparation moisture in the wicket, Police were invited to take first strike and posted a challenging 241-9 in their 35 overs. Slamming an attractive 56 off just 22 balls was all-rounder Michael Newland.
Chipping in with valuable contributions were Kwesi Mickle (30), Phelbert Willburgh 26 and Rocky Hutson 20. Bowling for Young Warriors, off spinning all-rounder Kevin Ramdeen took 3-50 from 7 overs and pacer Suresh Dhanai 2-48 from 5 overs.
In reply, Young Warriors’ openers Sasenarine Sukhdeo and Vishal Mohabir put on 88 for the first wicket in 16.2 overs before Sukhdeo was bowled for 51 (6×4). One run later Mohabir was run out for 34 and Warriors were 89-2.
Police never let up and were led by medium pacer Kurt Griffith who ripped through the middle order picking up four consecutive wickets as Young Warriors were reduced to 119-6. Videsh Singh who made a half century in the previous round and Rudolph Baker tried to repair the damage putting on 36 between them but they both fell in quick succession.
Singh made 56 (6×4) and Baker 10. Young Warriors eventually fell for 174 in 31.3 overs to lose by 69 runs. Bowling for Police, Kurt Griffith took 4-37 from 7 overs and off spinner Albert Sinclair 3-25 from 6.3 overs.
