Guyana had fielded 4 boxers to compete for big bucks in the current Contender boxing series in Kingston Jamaica and even though hoping for the best, local pundits had earlier predicted that former European Boxing Champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman had stood the most realistic chance of ‘bringing home the bacon.’
True to prediction, the local boxing icon has commenced his trek for championship honours and the lucrative prize with a crunching second round knockout over Jamaican Derrick ‘Guts’ Spencer. Reports out of Jamaican said that Eastman had things his own way in scoring a knock-out win over Spencer in the second round of the six-round contest.
The win has put a monkey’s wrench in earlier predictions that suggested an easy passage for Jamican, Sakima Mullings and now Eastman is heavily tipped to win the top prize. However, he will have to contend with Mullings who has so far stopped Eastman’s countryman, Revlon Lake, in an earlier fight in the tournament.
Mullings has also outpointed Eastman when they faced off in an earlier version of Guyana Fight Night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) last year.
Eastman will next enter the ring against Jamaican, Kevin ‘Bus Boy’ Hylton, May 21, next and this bout appears to be tougher than his first. Hylton has also fought once and scored a third round knockout over Trinidadian Prince-Lee Isidore in the final fight of the first round of the tournament.
Reports are that the 28 year-old Trinidadian, demonstrated superior speed and boxing skills and seemed to be in charge of the bout until Hylton landed the decisive blow that sent him sprawling to the canvas. He got up quickly but did not survive the standing count, the referee determining that he had not sufficiently recovered from what was a dangerous blow.
Also on May 21, Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis will face Ramel ‘Sub-Zero’ Lewis and the former boxer is seeded at number three for the second round of the contest, behind Mullings, the number one seed, and Eastman, the second seed. Donovan ‘Police’ Campbell rounds out the top four.
The winner takes home two million (Jamaican) dollars with the runner up earning J$500,000. The boxers finishing in the third and fourth places receive J$250,000 and J$200,000 respectively.
