A strong 14-member University of Guyana Athletics Team will depart today to participate in the Barbados Relay Fair scheduled to be staged at the National Stadium.
The team which departs today for the Caribbean Island includes: Kareem Critchlow, Dane Johnson, Floyd Phillips, Kadeem Peters, Delon Willis, Owen Adonis, Adesina Flatts, Cleveland Forde, Joshua Griffith, Kiswana Jefford, Feona Jones, Kezia Bess, Kim Chan and Tamica Garnett with Sports Co-ordinator of the University Lavern Fraser-Thomas as Manager and Mark Scott as Head Coach.
Team captain Adonis speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday during their final training session, at Police Sports Club, informed that they are thoroughly prepared and excited to go to the Meet and perform well.
“Preparations went well, we had everyone coming out to train which was conducted from Monday to Friday under Coach Scott and the confidence in the Camp is high,” he expressed.
Adonis said he expects the team to win medals in all the events, but singled out the 4×100 metres team and the 4×400 metres units as the strongest possible contenders to capture medals.
He also pointed out that athletes such as himself, Critchlow, Willis and Peters as strong candidates for podium spots, while on the distaff side, the same could be said of Chan, Jones and Flatts.
Quite a few of the athletes are returning for the second time and they are expected to lead the charge for gold as well as assist in helping the first timers adjust to the atmosphere of international competition.
Chan, who is the designated leader of the ladies squad in her remarks, spoke of the purpose of their involvement, stating that apart from going to the Games to do their best, they are also trying to ignite interest in sports on the Campus.
“We are helping to promote sports at the institution so we are therefore trying to encourage more students to become involved in sports at UG,” she informed.
Meanwhile, Coach Scott when asked about the team’s preparations said that it has gone well with the athletes working Monday-Saturday and their work ethic has caused him to have high expectations of success.
He noted also that the composition of the team has given rise to a high degree of optimism of gaining medals, pointing to the team’s strength which he felt lies in the 4×100 and 4×400 metres relays.
The team he said will participate in all the races since according to him it is a Festival and while the interaction among students will be of benefit, it is only fitting that they go there and have fun as well.
The team returns on Monday.
