Despite the sport suffering from a lack of support from an athlete perspective at the senior level, the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) has been able to ignite interest at the youth level.
Set to reinvigorate the interest of the sport will be three junior athletes who have been selected to represent this nation at the inaugural South American Youth Games that will be contested in Lima, Peru from September 9 to 29, 2013.
GAWA Secretary Deion Nurse has disclosed that the three athletes (1 male 2 females) selected are 15 year-old Darren Williams, 15 year-old Deniola Bristol and 14 year-old Sheriah Melville. Team
Coach is Sean Cozier.
Williams, who attends East Ruimveldt Secondary School will compete in the 77kg class, Bristol, a student of St. Roses High will seek glory in the 53kg category, while Melville who attends Dolphin Secondary will be seeking to upstage the opposition in the +53kg category.
Nurse further stated that he is confident in the ability of the athletes who have been under his guidance as Head Coach; Sean Cozier has been performing duties as Coach. Sessions are being held in the evenings daily at the True Foundation Gym, West Ruimveldt.
Prior to the South American Youth Games, Sheriah Melville will be representing Guyana at the Pan American Youth Championships (Under-17) scheduled for Cancun, Mexico from September 2 – 9, 2013.
Melville was also due to represent Guyana at the Pan American Under-15 championships in the USA this month (August 15-19) but her participation was not possible due to the lack of funding. This will not be a deterrent this time around as the Pan American Federation (ticket) and local donors have combined to ensure that Melville is in Mexico, next month.
