As executives of the lawn tennis fraternity continue to devise initiatives towards the development of the sport, a group of eager persons out of the Diamond EBD community have started sessions and are set to benefit immensely following the commencement of the 3rd edition of the Diamond Tennis Club (DTC) Summer Camp at the Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI) Courts in that community yesterday and will culminate at the same venue next weekend.
The programme is geared to introduce participants to the intricacies of the sport while utilizing their spare time by providing leisurely and productive activities. President of the DTC, Ricky Januna, is in charge of sessions with assistance from his Secretary, Deochand Singh, while Andre Lopes will spearhead the coaching sessions.
Branch manager of the GBTI, Rawatti Mohandeo, who is also a member of the DTC, was at the function yesterday and conveyed her blessings to the organizers and participants on behalf of the executive of GBTI. She said that they were delighted to continue supporting the programme and urged the children to soak up as much knowledge as they can.
Ms Mohandeo said that she hopes that the children continue to pursue their dreams in the sport even after the programme ends.
First Vice President of the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA), Grace McCalman was also at the function and conveyed deep gratitude to the officials of the GBTI. She urged the children to enjoy themselves even as they become proficient in the intricacies of the sport. She also denounced the notion that lawn tennis is only for the rich and fortunate, informing the children that even those among the proletariat could participate. She voiced the concern that children are often deprived of recreational activity in place of academic vocations even as she emphasized the need for balance. “Tennis provides that balance and I urge you to enjoy yourselves to the fullest,” said Ms McCalman.
Meanwhile, there will be two sessions each day; Children U-18 will be accommodated between 15:00hrs-16:30hrs while adults will be tutored between 16:30hrs-18:00hrs.
