The Stewartville based Eagles FC created one of the biggest upsets to date in the Stag Beer sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Senior League, a 1-0 win over Den Amstel FC on Sunday last.
With the home advantage and a 6th place position in the points table, as opposed to Eagles’ 8th place, Den Amstel went into the rubber as the hands down favourite to win but Eagles, one of the young clubs on the West Side had different thoughts.
The game was a close affair with both sides not allowing the other to impose its will. The defensive players stepped up to the plate as they kept each other at bay. So close was the battle that no goals were scored in the opening half.
With every passing minute, the pressure was turning up on the home team but Eagles, as the underdog, kept their focus. They were rewarded 19 minutes into the second half with Kerron Schmidt lobbing a well timed ball over the head of the advancing goalkeeper Ryan Hunte in the 64th minute to silence the home supporters.
It was a wakeup call for Den Amstel even as Eagles were flying high. The goal gave the leaders that extra momentum and energy to keep the Den Amstel side at bay for the remainder of the encounter as they recorded their first win of the league while handing Den Amstel their second loss.
Eagles’ custodian, Jason Carroll was the hero of the win as he was able to nullify the offensive maneuvers of the Den Amstel forward line. Eagles now move to 4 points, while Den Amstel remain on 6.
Uitvlugt Warriors had no such worries when they took on Young Achievers in the clash that featured two teams with an unblemished record. But by the end of the 90 minutes, it was Young Achievers whose stats showed one loss, Uitvlugt winning the game 2-1, their third win in five matches.
Goals were scored either side of play, Jamal Harvey opened proceedings in the 37th. Three minutes later, Young Achievers drew level compliments of a Sherwin Liverpool goal that evened things up. It was not until the 78th minute that Uitvlugt were again able to restore the advantage through a Jamal Petty effort and that was enough to ensure that they took away full points from that match-up to maintain their unbeaten run with win number three from as many encounters. It was Young Achievers’ first loss in three games.
On Saturday, Beavers recorded their first points, a 2-0 win over the still pointless De Kinderen. Maxwell Trapp in the 15th minute and Gavin Anderson in the 51st were the players that designed the win for Beavers, their first in three games. It was De Kinderen’s fifth loss in as many matches.
Also taking full points in another bruising clash were Seawall FC who defeated Bagotville/Nismes 1-0. Seasoned campaigner Clement Brown netted in the 80th minute to lead Seawall to their third win in three starts. It was Bagotville/Nismes’ second loss in five games.
