Annai led by a helmet-trick from Garville Daniels (4, 48, 81 & 92) set up a mouthwatering clash against St. Ignatius on Sunday after beating Aishalton 4-1, at the St. Ignatius Community Sports Club ground.
Playing in the 2013 Digicel Schools Football Championship yesterday, Annai went ahead as early as the 4th minute when Daniels hit a right foot ripper past a transfixed James Indach stationed between the uprights.
Both teams missed clear chances of getting on the score sheet as Daniels went wide from close range, while Aishalton’s Marlon Gomes struck directly to Burthland Scipio in goal for Annai.
However, Annai was able to increase their advantage three minutes into injury time through Daniels after winning a free kick from about 30 yards out, hitting a curling shot that beat the high jumping Indach, before landing on the inside of the crossbar and bouncing over the goal line.
The referee’s whistle sounded seconds after to signal the break. On the resumption, Aishalton looked more purposeful in attack and could have reduced the deficit through Abijah Michael, who weaved his way past two defenders and unleashed a stinging shot at goal, but it sailed just over the crossbar to the relief of Scipio.
Despite several more raids on goal, none of their attempts was able to breach the airtight defence of Annai or come close to threatening Scipio and it was clear that they would have a long afternoon.
Annai who looked menacing on the counter attack stretched their lead further through the irrepressible Daniels, who sliced through two tackles, before firing a fierce right footer that was partially saved by Indach, before Daniels ran on and lashed it home.
Aishalton gained some solace when Michael was brought down in the penalty area and he got up to rip a shot past Scipio from the penalty spot. It was a little reprieve which did not last long as Daniels was not finished yet, scoring the goal of the game.
It started on the right flank with the nippy Shirvaj Lall first befuddling two markers, before chipping the ball into the path of Daniels, who was lurking inside the penalty area and he delicately dinked it over the head of the advancing Indach, leaving him with no chance of recovering as the ball bounced agonizingly into the back of the net.
At the game yesterday was Digicel Head of Customer Care Sherwyn Osborne, who gave a brief address shortly before the start of play and Co-ordinator Megan Thomas.
